When I read comic strips about comic books and female fans are almost always depicted as being interested in independent, non-superhero titles. I mean, I like non-superhero titles myself but I also like me some spandex-clad badassery, yeah?

To be fare FAIR (OMG, how'd I not notice that error?!), Comic Critics and The Rack both feature well-developed and interesting female characters but come *on* where's our female Marvel zombies and DC fanatics who aren't interested in Sandman over Batman?

*grumble* Gonna watch more Linkara...

Playing devil's advocate because I'm ignorant of the reasons that this should be bothersome... could the depiction of female fans as being interested in independent titles be part of an attempt to make those female-fan characters interesting? Could it be well-intentioned, as a way to prevent a sexist "I only like superheroes because they're wearing spandex" portrayal?

I have never seen it taken for granted that female comics-readers are only into superhero comics for the eye-candy. I have seen it taken for granted that I, as a female comics-reader, wouldn't be interested in Green Lantern and would I perhaps like to check out Sandman?

Never mind that I would like to check out Sandman sometime, I specifically went there for new Green Lantern issues.

Aaaaaand this is why I only buy comics at my regular comic shop.

It's bothersome to me mainly because these are the ONLY female comics fans we see. You can see a variety of male comic fans, but female fans are generally portrayed as having no interest in superhero comics *at all*. When you have five male characters portrayed with varying interests and one or two female characters who are portrayed as ONLY liking certain styles of comics, it's not only frustrating, it's not accurate.

Though, to be fair, The Rack does show Lydia selecting some superhero comics on the 'Staff Picks' pages.
