Non-Spoiler Review: OMG it was good! OMG! OMG! OMG!
THERE ARE SPOILERS IN MY REVIEW AND MAY BE SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS -- READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
We went to see the TF movie this afternoon at the Greene and we saw it in the Director's Room which is their special "for an extra two bucks you can sit in a smaller theatre and see the movie on a digital screen" money maker. Last movie we saw in the Director's Room was Spiderman 3 which might not have been the best choice -- I mean, the quality was good but maybe it was the movie or something, I dunno.
But for Transformers? The screen worked! It probably helped that we were sitting in the G-row (you get assigned seats in the Director's Room because one of the other cool features is that they'll take your order and serve you food before the movie starts. More on seating in a minute...
Now, the last time we went to the movies, we ate at the theatre -- which you can do 'cause the Greene has two concession stands, one serving movie snacks and the other serving Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and other sundry sandwiches, pizza and ice cream and Starbucks. They've also got a bar and grill in the theatre and for about $18 bucks a person you can get dinner and a movie there. All of which is just blows me away with its fanciness. The problem is, eating at the theatre costs more than the theatre tickets do -- as in, we could all go to Applebee's or TGIFriday's and get steak dinners for the cost of three hot dog combos at the theatre (though the hot dog combos are good, don't me wrong).
So, instead we ate at Burger King before the movie and I got the Big Kids' Meal with the double hamburger -- partly because it's a smaller portion and cheaper price than even the Jr. Whopper meal but mainly because it comes with a Transformers kids meal toy. I got Ironhide! YAY!
After dinner, we headed over to the theatre and turned out to be the first ones to arrive. Rob gave us our tickets and I looked to see that I had seat G-2. Which tickled the hell out of me. (And apparently, some guy got seat G-1 and tried to sell his ticket stub for 50 bucks. Since it was the 6:15pm showing and the crowd was mostly families, he didn't get any takers).
We sat around waiting for the movie to start, which was relatively easy to do since the theatre was comfy and they were playing the usual pre-movie trivia stuff. We asked about ordering food but since nobody came, we finally headed out to the concession stand and got some pretzels and sodas for us all -- which of course meant that the order takers showed up while we were gone. So, I ended up ordering a large diet Pepsi.
Note: Transformers is approximately two and a half hours long. Drinking a bottled water and a large Diet Pepsi is NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL and I am instituting new rule that I cannot have anything to drink during a movie because I ended up doing the in-your-seat-pee-pee dance during the last hour or so both Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End and Transformers. Oh my god, the agony!
The movie started on time and the previews look interesting. The first was for some movie which I thought was a Godzilla remake but which is apparently called "Bad Robot". There was also one for a movie called "Hot Rod" which is a comedy about a geek who wants to be a stuntman. "The Invasion" appears to be a remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" updated for the 2000s -- which also looks good and which actually made me jump more than the TF movie did. "Superbad" looks like it might be funny.
SPOILERS START HERE
The movie starts off with an opening narration by Optimus Prime that sucked me right in. I'd broken down and read the movie novelization and the comic book adaptation prior to the movie which I was afraid would not so much wreck my enjoyment of the movie but make it so that I knew what was coming. Luckily, the movie is different enough from both adaptations that I didn't have a problem with knowing what was coming.
The plot is pretty simple -- the Autobots and the Decepticons are searching for the All-Spark which has incredible power (otherwise, why would it be the movie's MacGuffin?). The Autobots (or Autonomous Robotic Organisms which they're known by for all of about five seconds) want to use the power of the All-Spark to restore their homeworld which has been devestated by the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons
The All-Spark naturally ended up on Earth several thousand years ago (approximatley 10,000 BC according to the movie) because if it hadn't we wouldn't have a movie.
After the narration, we're introduced to one of the four groups of humans featured in the film. A group of Army/Air Force soldiers on deployment in Quatar. They're pretty standard -- we got the ethnic guy, the black guy, the guy who just wants to get back to his wife and kid and the guy with glasses. We see them land at their base and all seems perfectly normal until an unexpected helicopter shows up and all hell breaks loose.
Amy and I got the video game last week and the opening level for the Decepticons is basically lifted straight out of this scene. In the game, you're supposed to trash the base, which Blackout does like whoa! Watching this scene in the movie made me go "Hey! I was trying to blow that place up!" in my head. I'm hoping this will make finishing the level easier 'cause it is a stone bitch...
The movie cuts from Qatar to Tranquility, USA where Sam Witwicky is giving a presentation to his history class -- and delivering exposition to the audience -- about his great-grandfather Archibald Witwicky who was an arctic explorer who ended up in a mental institution raving about some giant metal ice man he found back in the 1890s. Gee, I wonder who that might be?
Sam is obsessed with selling his great-grandfather's artifacts in order to get the money he needs for the car his dad, Ron, promised to help him buy. Luckily for Sam and the movie, Sam manages to get the money and the grades he needs for his dad to help him out.
I love the Porche joke. It's cheesy and stupid but I love it.
Sam and Ron show up at the used car lot at the same time that Bumblebee creeps in in junker Camaro mode. One of the things I love about this movie is that the Robots in Disguise ARE in disguise. Even in robot mode, they're able to move stealthily -- except for when they don't bother with it, namely at the big battle at the end of the movie.
Bumblebee insures that he is the car that Sam buys -- and gets a dig in at VW at the same time.
The movie moves along at a pretty good clip, there's a lot of setup required for the end of the movie, but it doesn't really drag. Part of what helps, IMO, is that the movie cuts back and forth between different scenes -- that and Bay seems to have done what he did in "Armageddon" and let the actors just have fun with their parts. Shia LeBouf brings a manic energy to Sam that just fits. Walky over on Shortpacked describes him as being the everyman who wiseasses his way out of jams and yeah, the description fits. In addition, the rest of the humans in the cast bring their roles home -- Sam's mom isn't in the movie long and she manages to kill in almost every scene she's in. Everybody hits the mark and, to mix a metaphor, knocks it straight out of the park.
And I LIKE Mikela! This is a worthy successor to Carly -- she's smart, she's clever, she keeps her head in a crisis and she manages to help save the day. The romance between her and Sam (doggamit, I keep wanting to call him Spike) grows naturally from the events in the film.
The Transformers aren't the main focus of every scene, but they managed to be featured enough to make things interesting. Particularly evil tape deck Frenzy!
The robotic 'actors' and their voice actors likewise hit it out of the park. Peter Cullen's Prime voice has changed slightly but you can still tell it's him. Apparently, it hurts him to do the voice so kudos to him for making the effort. The slightly raspier quality it has does actually add to the character, gives him an added gentleness.
Ratchet is voiced by Rhinox/Vector Sigma's VA and, to quote Rob, he sounds like a doctor. There's a nice bit near the end of the movie where Bumblebee gets injured and Sam calls for Ratchet.
Ironhide's VA sounds different from the old-school Ironhide but it still works -- and I love him as a big ol' trigger-happy truck.
Jazz's voice took some getting used to -- the "What up, bitches?" line when he first meets Sam and Mikela threw me at first, but I got used to it.
Bumblebee is frickin' adorable but still a badass. One of my favorite bits -- other than when he pees on the jerk from Sector Seven, which was silly and juvenile and cracked my ass up because I have no shame! -- is when he's finally freed from Sector Seven's clutches by Sam and Mikela, he doesn't automatically forgive and forget. Instead, he drops his battle mask and warms up his cannons and Sam has to talk him down. It's a nice change.
The Autobots aren't the G1 characters we knew -- they're clearly based on them to some extent, but they are their own characters and I like that. The movie is, IMO, basically a grown-up version of the Transformers. It's not too grown up, thank god and it's certainly not Transformers: Buckets of Blood. In fact, the human deaths -- or at least the ones we see up close, as opposed to the people you know die during the running battles -- are relatively bloodless. A couple guys get stabbed in the chest by Frenzy's throwing disks and just get hit and drop and when Scorponok stabs one of Lennox's teammates through the chest, it's a quick stab forward and then the guy is thrown off screen and it's all done as a long shot, instead of up close. I've seen bloodier stuff on Grey's Anatomy -- tree through torso *gag*.
The Decepticons don't get to talk much and when they do, it's usually in a vaguely modem-meets-Chinese/Japanese language. They do a neat thing where the Decepticons will talk and words run across the screen in "Cybertronian" (for want of a better term) and then is translated into English. It's so cool!
Starscream, Barricade and Megatron are the only ones who speak any English and it's not for long. The movie is very much Autobot-centric, but really I think it works. Hopefully though, the sequel will give us some more Decepticon action (there's rumors of a gestalt in the second movie -- *crosses fingers for Bruticus!*)..
Frenzy? Frickin' rules. he's easily one of the more alien looking TFs in the film. He's a cute little evil bugger.
Barricade is also a favorite. I love that he's an evil police car, not only because he was at one point supposed to be named Brawl, but just because it's neat to see them play with the whole idea of making a police car one of the bad guys.
The rest of the Decepticons don't get much time on screen, but what time they do have rocks. I love Bonecrusher's alt mode and how he seems to skate along during the freeway fight. Brawl is Devestator in the movie -- apparently there was a glitch that didn't get corrected in time, but he's still all full of evil tank goodness! And Blackout looks like he has pigtails or dreadlocks when his rotors are hanging down behind him.
The end of the movie sets up the possibility of a sequel -- don't care that the majority of the Decepticons are dead and at the bottom of a trench, not like some idiot won't go down and pull them out. And even if they don't, Starscream got away and was last seen heading spacewards. Between that and Optimus's radio message to the Autobots still in space, we got the possibility of new characters for the second movie -- and it's a better set up than the original TF movie!
And I'm betting Jazz comes back, since apparently there's a new toy version of him coming out with his G1 markings that has some hand-waving on the back about Ratchet being able to bring him back.
We almost went back and saw the movie again tonight but decided to go again Thursday and I can't wait! This is the first movie I've seen twice in the theatres for a long, long time. And it's definatley on the buy it when it comes out on DVD list. Oh hell yes!
----
ETA: It was nice to see a movie where the Secret (And Probably Evil) Government Organization That Knew All isn't all-knowing and ends up being dissolved by the end of the movie. Which makes me wonder if some of those guys might not just decide to side with the Decepticons in the second movie. Y'know, maybe a Dr. D'archevil (or however you would Frenchify Archevil)

Date: 2007-07-04 08:13 am (UTC)1) Unicron.
2) Jhaixus (or however his name is spelled)
3) Starscream simply comes back with more 'Cons.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-07-04 08:25 am (UTC)Jihaxus could be done, but I'd rather see him as the third movie villain instead of Unicron. Though the problem with him is that his backstory would be tricky to explain. The first movie just introduced the idea of two factions, trying to squeeze in a third might be difficult. Though, by the third movie they could have it that Jihaxus finds out that Megatron/Starscream/whoever's leading the 'Cons and Prime are both on Earth and decide to bring his army to take them *both* out.
Personally, Starscream comes back with a buncha cons works for me (especially if he calls them his Brigade. He medically NEEDS to call them his Brigade!). There's any number of characters who could come back and if they do decide to go with a gestalt, the second movie would be a good place to introduce them -- with Prime having to form his own team out of say, a certain group of newcomers on Earth. Guys who turn into jets.
My personal pick for a gestalt in the second movie would be Bruticus 'cause dude, I'm biased like whoa! But Menasor could be done -- especially if the movie got another deal with GMC or Chevy. Apparently Bumblebee's model and paint color has sold out. And, to be honest, Devestator would work really well and make for some cool reveals (picture it: the Autobots drive past a road crew or a construction site and then *BAM* out come the Constructicons!

Also, I want to learn Decpeticon. They need to release info on how they made the language.

Date: 2007-07-04 09:01 am (UTC)betterbadder as Galvatron! Also, Optimus picked up a piece of the Cube after the battle with Megatron, and I’m hoping they’ll use that to bring back Jazz.Sounds from your review like you enjoyed the movie then, and a very good review it was too. I hope you don’t mind me commenting; I stumbled across your articles on writing action sequences in fiction (excellent work, by the way, and very useful. Thanks for sharing!) and have been lurking around here to read your stories since then, TF fangirl as I am. ;) Would you mind if I friended you?

And I *heart* Bumbles! Squee! =)

Date: 2007-07-04 07:13 pm (UTC)I dunno, I liked her the way she played Mikaela. Not everyone's going to fit into some attention-getting stereotype. I think she made a nice contract to Sam's "dude this is so cool!" attitude with her "I really have no clue hwat's going on, but I'm going to try and make the most of it" outlook. That said, opinions are opinions. ^^

Date: 2007-07-05 09:06 am (UTC)I loved all the little immature humor bits thrown in. They were AWESOME.
I loved the Autobot characters, seriously. Jazz is my favorite *sad moment*, but the rest come in close.
I finally saw this last night!
Date: 2007-07-14 10:33 am (UTC)I LOVED this movie. I think they did a fantastic job updating the look and feel while retaining what made the series so amazing in the first place. I'm so glad they got Cullen as Prime. And yeah, I keep wanting to call Sam Spike too!
I missed Soundwave; he was always my favorite Decepticon. :( But at least they apparently plan to "do him right" in one of the next movies. For Frenzy I'm caught between "he was fun" and "well, I guess they had to add something cute and slapstick as a crowd-pleaser."
The only real negative I had was Sector 7. They were too over-the-top and slapstick, and didn't fit with the largely serious feel of the rest of the military and government stuff. Normally I like John Turturro, but the scenery-chewing he was doing just didn't fit with the rest of the movie. Thankfully they were dissolved, so hopefully we won't see them in the next movies!
I was definitely pleased with the acting overall, though. It would be too tempting for many directors to allow the robots to be the sole stars of the show, with the humans taking back seat, and that didn't happen. I thought there was a great balance between the two.

Date: 2007-07-17 05:26 pm (UTC)Frenzy rocks! He's the bestest evil cassette player in the world! And apparently Soundwave is supposed to be in the sequel as is Shockwave and possibly the Constructicons.
As for Sector 7, I *liked* the fact that for once the secret government organization was a bunch of peculiar weirdos, though I do have to agree that John Turturro was a little too over the top in places. Though part of my mind kept going "That's Ambrose Monk! Yay Ambrose!"
