I got the DVD box set of Max Headroom today and am watching it now and am very happy to see that the show has held up really well over the last 20 some odd years. According to this article at io9.com, it was somewhat prophetic re: the future. It's one of my favorite SF shows from the 1980/early 1990s, up there with Alien Nation (which I also have all of on DVD 'cause HELL YEAH!).

My only complaint is that the original 1985 BBC pilot isn't included. Granted, it's the first episode redone but it was a lot darker and nastier and it should be on there 'cause me wantie.

Yeah, I'm basically passing on the set until I can get the telefilm with it. The remade pilot episode was decent, but the original had such incredible cinematography that there's just no comparison.

What's weird is I don't know if I ever actually *saw* the original pilot or if I'm remembering reading a book version of it, but dang it, that would have been the perfect addition.

Check it out if you have the chance. There's a medium-quality video file floating around lots of different places. I've been looking for a higher quality one, but haven't been very successful. It's pretty awesome. I was just a kid when the show was on, but even watching this as an adult 15+ years later, it was pretty mind-blowing.

We were watching an episode last night and there was a "commerical" on the show talking about how "Your inalienable rights are access to consumer credit, unlimited TV and home security [or something like that, not so sure on the third]" and for a second, I forgot I was watching a DVD, not an actual broadcast TV show 'cause it sounded like something you might see these days. Particularly considering I found a website last night that offers 'food insurance' -- i.e. they'll sell you a year's worth of freeze-dried food guaranteed to last 25 years for 10,000 bucks. Yeah, Max seems less fictional all the time...
