GI Joe Resolute -- Episodes 1&2 is up at Adult Swim. You can also find them on Youtube (along with
Episode Three)
In a word? AWESOME!
The episodes are short -- four to five minutes long, but as the original Clone Wars cartoon showed, you can pack a LOT into a short space if you try and this show does.
This is the grown-up version of the Sunbow GI Joe cartoon. And thankfully, this isn't a bad thing (so far).
It starts off with Scarlett in disguise as a police officer investigating the murder of Major Bludd (well, presumably he din't stabinate himself) and moves through setting up a Cobra sneak attack against the entire world. Cobra Commander delivers a Citizens of the World speech to the UN which is chilling.
The cartoon mixes in cartoon and comic elements -- and does a nice take with the whole Scarlett/Duke/Snake-Eyes triangle in episode two. And what Snake-Eyes does to some poor Vipers in that episode is darkly funny at least if you're me. And I am, so that works.
Other happy-making things: Scarlett kicks ass! I think Charles Adler is voicing Flint! Cobra is an effective villain! There's support staff who get to do smart things! Gung-ho's interaction with "the kids" in Episode three makes me happy, not just because the person who figures out the Cobra Weapon Of the Week is a woman but also because she's support staff! Greenshirts For the Win! Duke acts like a superior officer and holds Joes accountable for their actions! Now, if only Resolute!Duke could meet GI Joe: The Movie!Falcon and kick his ass...
Not so happy-making things: They killed Bazooka in the first episode (ok, and they killed Major Bludd but I'm not a Major Bludd fan). Fortunately, it had a reason behind it but here's hoping they don't decide to off a bunch of minor characters just for the sake of showing how gritty they can be.
One thing I'm worried about is that the show will stay dark -- what I liked about the old GI Joe series was that it didn't take itself too seriously. They could be humorous. I know Resolute probably doesn't want to have the Joes cavorting with Egyptian Gods or killing slime monsters with apples, but they can be realistic and still have some lighter elements and I hope they do.
Also, since the show is being aimed at adults, they're able to show blood but I hope they don't take that to mean that they HAVE to show blood, all the time.
Here's hoping that when the first 10 eps are done, they'll go to DVD ASAP.
