RIP George Andrews Howes and welcome home.
Jan. 5th, 2011 08:13 pmMIA in Vietnam remains of Knox soldier identified
Andy Howes remains positively identified
Andy Howes is my cousins' uncle. I never knew him, but I knew of him and I know that his being missing was hard on my aunt Val. I remember watching the internment of the Unknown Soldier of the Vietnam War and seeing her crying because the soldier being interred might have been her brother.
None of my immediate family served in Vietnam. For me, as a kid, the war was mostly something that Rick Simon and Thomas Magnum talked about; it was where the A-Team got into all that trouble and the place that made Rambo...well, Rambo. Finding out about Andy made the war a lot more real than the guys on TV ever could have, if only because his loss hurt a woman I cared a great deal about.
Val died about ten years ago, but before she did, she and her brother donated DNA to help with idenfitication. The process that helped identify Andy wasn't perfected until 2007/2008 -- nearly 20 years after Andy's remains were returned to the US in 1988.
He was identified in thanks to the work done at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii.
